What method marks are
Method marks are given for using the correct step or method, even if the final figure is wrong. This means a student who shows the right thinking can still earn most of the marks despite making one small calculation slip.
Why showing working matters
If you write only the final answer and it’s wrong, the examiner can’t award any method marks because they can’t see your steps. Showing working lets them give marks for each correct step along the way.
Write the formula first, then substitute
For calculations like depreciation or ratios, write the formula first, then substitute the figures, then show the answer. This makes your thinking clear and makes it easy for the examiner to follow and award marks.
Lay out calculations neatly, with labels
Scattered calculations are hard to mark. Lay out your work neatly, label what each figure represents, and keep it easy to follow. Clear presentation helps both you and the examiner.
Don’t erase, just cross out
If you think a calculation is wrong, don’t fully erase it until you’re sure. Sometimes work you think is wrong still contains a correct step that deserves method marks.
Show steps even if you can do it mentally
Even if you can work something out quickly in your head, write down the steps. A wrong mental answer earns nothing, but correct written steps earn method marks even if the final total is off.
Clear format helps the examiner
Examiners mark many scripts; neat, organised work makes it easy for them to see that you deserve the marks. Making it hard for an examiner to read your work never helps.
