How to Answer Structured Accounting Questions to Secure Method Marks
One-hour paid trial · Same-day reply · from RM50/hr
In the SPM Prinsip Perakaunan paper, many candidates panic when their final answer is wrong and assume the whole question is lost. In reality, structured and essay questions are usually marked on method: the examiner awards marks for correct steps, format, headings, and placement even when the final figure is slightly off. Understanding how method marks are given can lift your grade even if your ability stays the same: you just answer more neatly and strategically.
Below is a practical way to answer structured questions so you collect the method marks students often miss. It is not about guessing questions; it is about answering habits you can practise for any topic in the KSSM syllabus.
Know the difference between method and answer marks
Method marks reward the process: writing the correct format, giving the statement a proper heading, choosing the right account, showing your working, and placing items on the correct debit or credit side. Answer marks reward the accurate final value.
So one wrong figure early on need not ruin the rest: later steps that are consistent with that wrong figure can still earn marks (the 'own figure' principle). So never leave a blank simply because you are unsure of the final number; carry the process through neatly.
Write full formats and headings
Easy marks are lost when statement headings are incomplete. For financial statements, write the business name, the type of statement, and the period or date (for example 'for the year ended 31 December 20X5' versus 'as at 31 December 20X5'). The distinction between 'for the year ended' and 'as at' itself carries a mark.
Use the standard vertical format, arrange items in the correct order, and keep amount columns aligned. Marks for a neat format like this do not depend on whether your figures are right.
Show your working, not just the answer
For items such as depreciation, bad debts, provision for doubtful debts, accruals and prepayments, show the formula or steps. For instance, write 'Depreciation = 10% x RM40,000 = RM4,000' rather than only 'RM4,000'.
When working is shown, the examiner can award method marks for the calculation approach even if the final result is wrong. It also lets you re-check quickly if you have time at the end of the paper.
Carry figures forward consistently
If a figure is wrong in the income statement, carry that same figure consistently into the statement of financial position. This consistency protects method marks later because the examiner assesses whether your steps are logical given the numbers you actually used.
If instead you keep changing figures midway, you break the chain of marks and risk losing far more than the single original error.
Read command words carefully
Words like 'prepare', 'calculate', 'explain', 'state' and 'describe' demand different responses. 'State' needs only a term or short sentence, while 'explain' requires a reasoned account. Answering at the wrong level wastes time and can cost you full marks.
Underline key figures and special conditions in the question, such as depreciation rates, transaction dates, or adjustment details. End-of-period adjustments are often where the most method marks can be collected.
Manage time and organise your working
Allocate time according to the marks each question carries, and start with the part you are most confident in to secure early marks. Keep tidy supporting workings for things like control accounts or depreciation schedules so the main statement stays clean.
If time is short, at least write the format, headings, and items you are sure of. A correct partial structure still earns method marks, unlike a blank space.
Practise with real marking schemes
The most effective way to understand method marks is to check your answers against official marking schemes, not just the final answers. Notice where marks are given line by line, and train yourself to write to that pattern.
After each practice, list the types of marks you missed (incomplete headings, working not shown or items on the wrong side) and target those weaknesses in your next attempt.
