Many SPM Prinsip Perakaunan (SPM code 3756) candidates understand topics such as financial statements, control accounts and correction of errors. Yet when results come out, their marks disappoint, not because they lacked knowledge but because they ran out of time on the longer subjective paper. Structured accounting questions demand many calculation steps, a tidy format and correctly ordered accounts, so every minute wasted on one question is marks lost on another.

Below are practical time-management strategies for the long subjective paper: how to divide your time, make quick decisions and stay calm to the last question. The advice applies to any version of the paper.

Understand the shape of the subjective paper first

Before talking about time, you need to know the kind of questions you will face. The subjective paper typically contains structured questions that ask you to prepare full accounts, statements or schedules rather than one-line answers. These include trading accounts, income statements and statements of financial position for sole traders, partnerships, clubs and societies and limited companies, as well as topics such as cash budgets and ratio analysis.

Once you understand that longer questions carry more marks but also eat more time, you can plan your answering order more wisely. Do not assume every question weighs the same. Identify which ones need layered calculations and which can be finished quickly.

Budget your time before you write

At the start of the exam, spend a minute or two flipping through the whole paper and setting a time estimate for each question according to its marks. The simple principle is to allocate time in proportion to marks, not by feel. Higher-mark questions deserve more time, but within a limit.

Write the expected finishing time for each question in the margin, for example that the first question should be done by the thirtieth minute. This gives you clear checkpoints so you know the moment you fall behind. Always keep a small buffer at the end for checking.

Read carefully and choose wisely

The costliest mistake is misreading what a question wants. Underline keywords such as 'prepare', 'calculate', 'explain' and the accounting period dates. Watch for additional information such as depreciation, bad debts, year-end adjustments and accrued expenses, because one missed detail can wreck an entire statement.

If the paper allows a choice of questions, take the time to pick the ones whose data is clearest and that you feel most confident about. Do not be tempted by a question that looks short but is full of tricky adjustments.

Put the correct accounting format first

In accounting, format earns marks. A complete statement heading, labelled debit and credit columns, and the correct ordering of items in the income statement and statement of financial position are all rewarded. Writing a tidy format also saves time, because you no longer have to rethink where each item goes.

Get so familiar with the standard layout of each type of account that it becomes automatic. When the structure is fixed in memory, your hand moves fast and your mind can focus on the calculations rather than the arrangement.

Do not get stuck on one question

When one figure will not balance, many candidates stubbornly spend tens of minutes hunting for a small error. This is a leading cause of running out of time. If a trial balance or statement does not balance after a quick check, mark that question, move on to the next, and return later with a fresher mind.

Remember that marks are awarded for method and working, not just the final answer. Showing clear working still earns you marks even when the final figure is slightly off. Leaving a question blank, on the other hand, means zero.

Set aside time to check and balance

Do not put your pen down the instant you finish writing. Keep a few minutes at the end to check simple but important things: does debit equal credit, have depreciation and doubtful debt adjustments been included, and are headings and dates written correctly.

A quick review like this often returns several easily lost marks. Prioritise checking the high-mark questions first, because that is where a correction has the biggest effect.

Practise answering under timed conditions

Time management cannot be learned only on exam day. Train with full papers while setting a timer, and try to finish ahead of the real allowance so you have breathing room. After each practice, note which questions were slow and why.

With repeated practice you will know the true speed of your hand and mind rather than a guess. Speed that comes from practice is far more reliable than speed that comes from panic.

How we help

FAQ

How long should I spend on each question? Allocate time according to each question's marks, set a finishing time for every question, and keep a buffer for checking. The exact figures depend on how your paper is laid out on the day.

What if my statement does not balance? Do one quick check, and if it still does not balance, move on to other questions and come back later. Make sure all working is shown so you still earn method marks.

Can I start with just one session? Yes. You can begin with one paid one-hour trial lesson at the teacher's rate, and reach us on WhatsApp for the exact rate before you start.
