Securing Method Marks Even When Your Figure Is Wrong
One-hour paid trial · Same-day reply · from RM50/hr
Many SPM Prinsip Perakaunan candidates lose heart the moment they realise a figure early in their answer is wrong. They assume one small slip will collapse the entire mark for that question. In reality, examiners mark your work using a scheme that separates method marks from the mark for the final answer. This means you can still earn most of the marks even when your final number is inaccurate, as long as your working is correct and clearly shown.
Below is how method marks work in the KSSM Prinsip Perakaunan paper (code 3756), and the answering habits that help you keep them. The aim is not to encourage carelessness, but to stop a single mistake from turning into a disaster in the exam hall.
What are method marks?
Method marks are awarded because you used the correct process or format, not only because your final answer is exact. For example, in an income statement, placing cost of sales in the right position, deducting expenses from gross profit in the right order, and laying out the statement neatly all carry marks even if one value you entered was miscalculated.
Examiners are trained to look for evidence that you understand accounting procedure. If the structure of your answer shows that understanding, the method marks remain yours.
The own-figure principle
One of the most important ideas is the own-figure rule, also called error carried forward. If you calculate gross profit with a wrong number early on, then use that wrong number consistently and correctly in the next steps, those later steps can still be awarded marks.
What matters is consistency. If you arrive at a gross profit of RM12,000 (when it should have been RM12,500 due to an addition slip), keep using RM12,000 correctly in your net profit calculation. Do not switch figures midway, as that breaks the chain of logic the examiner is trying to follow.
Show every step of your working
Method marks can only be given if the examiner can see your working. An answer that shows only a single final number with no calculation puts all your eggs in one basket: if that number is wrong, there is nothing left to mark.
Write short formulas or supporting calculations, for example 'Depreciation = 20% x RM10,000 = RM2,000'. If your asset cost figure is wrong, the correct formula and percentage still show the correct method. Get into the habit of writing workings in the answer space, not on rough paper that is never marked.
Protect your statement format and order
In financial statement questions, a large share of the marks comes from the correct format and order: the statement heading, the classification of current and non-current assets, the arrangement of liabilities, and the position of owner's equity. These format marks do not depend on every figure being accurate.
So even when you are unsure of a value, keep completing the structure of the statement. A neatly ordered Statement of Financial Position with one or two wrong figures is far better than a half-finished answer abandoned in panic.
Label every item clearly
Examiners award marks for items that are correctly labelled. 'Accrued rates expense RM300' earns a mark because you show you understand the accrual concept, even if the amount is miscalculated. An item with no label, or the wrong label, is hard to reward even if the number happens to be right.
Use precise accounting terms in line with the KSSM syllabus. Correct terminology is part of the method being assessed.
Do not erase, do not leave blanks
When candidates realise they have made a mistake, many rub out an entire section. This risks deleting work that carries method marks. It is better to cross out with a single neat line and write the correction beside it, so the original work can still be read if needed.
An answer space left blank can never earn marks. Even if you are stuck on the final figure, write the format, the labels, and any calculation you can manage.
Manage time so every question is attempted
Method marks are most often lost not because a candidate does not know the material, but because they run out of time and never touch the last question at all. Every question left unattempted means zero method marks.
Allocate time according to the marks for each question and move on when your time is up. You can return later. Getting an outline down for every question earns more than perfecting just one.
How we help
In online 1-to-1 lessons, our experienced teachers go through your practice papers step by step and show you where method marks are earned or lost.
The first lesson is a paid one-hour trial at the teacher's rate, from RM50/hr; ask for the exact rate on WhatsApp.
FAQ
Can I still get marks even if my final answer is wrong? Yes, as long as the method steps and format are shown correctly and consistently. The marking scheme does separate method marks from the mark for the final answer.
Should I show working even when the question does not ask for it? Yes. Without working, the examiner cannot award method marks if your final answer is wrong. Writing a short calculation is almost always worth it.
