Debtors Control Account Format
The Debtors Control Account is a summary account that records the total of all transactions with debtors for a period, and its balance should equal the sum of all balances in the Debtors Ledger. It is used as an internal control tool to detect posting errors and verify the accuracy of the Debtors Ledger without adding up each individual debtor's account.

A two-sided T-account: debit side on the left, credit side on the right; the balance carried down (bal c/d) is placed on the credit side and the opening balance brought down (bal b/d) on the debit side of the new period.
Write the account title centred at the top (Debtors Control Account), then split it into two equal sides; align the amount columns to the right, and rule a double line beneath the equal totals on both sides.
Parts of the format
- Account title
- The name 'Debtors Control Account' is written centred at the top to identify the control account that summarises the debtors ledger.
- Debit side
- Records items that increase amounts owed by debtors, such as opening balance, credit sales, dishonoured cheques and interest charged.
- Credit side
- Records items that reduce amounts owed by debtors, such as money received, discount allowed, returns inwards, bad debts and set-off.
- Balance b/d (opening)
- The debtors balance at the start of the period normally appears on the debit side because debtors are an asset.
- Balance c/d (closing)
- The balancing figure placed on the credit side to close the account; it should equal the total of balances in the debtors ledger.
- Equal totals
- The totals of both sides must be equal and are marked with a double line to show that the account balances.
