Meaning
Opening inventory is the value of unsold trading goods at the start of the accounting period, that is, the previous year's closing inventory brought forward. It has a debit balance and appears in the trial balance. In the Income Statement it is added when calculating the cost of goods sold.
Example
Cerdik Bookshop begins the year with stock worth RM5,000. This amount is the opening inventory, recorded as a debit balance in the trial balance and added to purchases when computing the cost of goods sold.
