Does a balanced Trial Balance mean there are no errors at all?
No. A Trial Balance only proves that total debits equal total credits. Errors such as omission, commission, principle, original entry, complete reversal and compensating errors still allow it to balance, so balancing is not absolute proof of accuracy.
Why does Closing Inventory not appear in the Trial Balance?
Under the periodic inventory system, the closing inventory value is only determined by a physical count after the balance date, i.e. after ledger balances have been extracted. Therefore only Opening Inventory (a debit balance) sits in the Trial Balance; closing inventory is recorded later via the General Journal for the Income Statement and the Statement of Financial Position.
How does closing inventory link the Income Statement to the Statement of Financial Position?
The same closing inventory figure is used twice: it is deducted in the Cost of Sales working in the Income Statement (lowering cost and raising gross profit), and at the same time it is shown as a current asset in the Statement of Financial Position. This is the linking relationship under the periodic inventory system.
